Why did my Instagram post fail?

Instagram refuses posts without a photo or video, from personal accounts, or with media it can't take. Check each cause in order, fix it, then retry.

Instagram is the strictest platform about what it accepts. Most failed Instagram posts have one of five causes. Check them in order, fix the one that applies, then retry the post.

Possible causes

  • The post has no photo or video.
  • The Instagram account is a personal account, not a Business or Creator account.
  • Instagram didn't accept the photo or video's format or shape.
  • Instagram's upload expired before the post was published.
  • The Instagram account needs reconnecting.

How to fix it

1. Add a photo or video

Instagram doesn't accept text-only posts. Add at least one photo or video.

2. Use a Business or Creator account

Personal Instagram accounts can't receive posts from other apps. Switch the account to a professional account in the Instagram app, then reconnect it in Hyvo. See Connect an Instagram account.

3. Use media Instagram accepts

If you see "Instagram did not accept the media":

  • Photos in any format Hyvo accepts are fine: Instagram only takes JPEG, so Hyvo sends a JPEG copy of PNG, WebP and GIF photos for you. Videos should be MP4 or MOV.
  • Check the shape. Instagram has limits on how tall or wide a photo can be; a very long or very wide image may be refused. Cropping it to square, 4:5 portrait or landscape usually fixes it.
  • For a Reel, use a vertical video within your plan's length limit. See Instagram posts, Reels and carousels.

4. Retry an upload that expired

"Instagram's upload expired before it was published" means Instagram took too long to process the file. Retry the post. A smaller video file helps.

5. Reconnect the account

If the Instagram account shows under Needs attention on the Connect page, reconnect it. See Reconnect an account.

Then retry the post

Open the post in Posts → Needs attention and choose Retry publishing.

If that doesn't work

Some causes apply to every platform, such as media that's no longer stored. See Why didn't my post publish? and Hyvo error messages and what they mean.

When to contact support

Contact Hyvo Support if Instagram keeps refusing a post that meets these rules. Tell us the Instagram account, when you tried to publish, and the exact message Hyvo shows.
